April is the cruelest month.

NY Philharmonic and the warmth of spring.

Charles Dutoit lead the NY Philharmonic Thursday night in a performance of Prokofiev's Violin Concerto #2 and Tchaikovsky's Symphony #5, at Lincoln Center, Avery Fisher Hall.

Soloist Lisa Batiashvili gave a stirring performance. She not only has a marvelous tone and expression from her violin but she is also a strong.visual presence. Her movements are graceful , energetic and poetic. Seeing her move with the music is a delight.

The Symphony #5 was a masterful effort by Mr. Dutoit and the orchestra. It doesn't get any better than this. The warm up was Stravinsky's Dumbarton Oaks, which was nice but overshadowed by the rest of the evening.

There are 2 more evenings to catch Mr. Dutoit in action , Friday and Saturday, if you can get a ticket.. Lisa is there too, hooray!

As you can see, warmer weather this spring has turned my attention away from snow. There could be some flurries next Tueday .

RESTAURANT REVIEW: OLLIE'S Chinese food.

Ollies at Broadway and 68th
is a good alternative to the high priced spots nearby Lincoln Center. Unfortunately, for me, I chose grilled Teriyaki shrimp. Healthy but much too dry. The soup looked and tasted great. The waiting staff was friendly and efficient enough to suit me. I can recommend Ollie's but choose wisely from the menu.

YOU GOTTA TRY
Fiorello's right across the street from Lincoln Center, on Broadway.. The Pizza is overpriced but out of this world. At times the crowds can make the place unattainable. There is always Josephina's right next door.

Cool April, so far

No big warm ups ahead for the next 10 days but plenty of April showers. We will have to wait patiently for sunscreen weather.

I should mention that I have seen the first bugs of spring and Moose is scratching fir fleas. Spring is here!

Winter not giving up.

We will have a rain/ice/ mix setting up for tomorrow, but little accumulation seems likely. Conditions won't really improve until Thursday.

For the 16th to the 20th of next week, it looks like a rain/mix will set up and there will be a return of rather cold weather.

The Bizzard of 1888

The great blizzard lives on to this day as the greatest of them all. It began on March 11th as a torrential rainstorm. On the 12th much colder air moved in and the snows began. While Long Island still had rain, in New Jersey, temperatures fell into the single numbers. The observatory at Central Park in NYC had a low of 6 degrees with an average of 9 during the day. A total of 21 inches of snow fell in New York but the fierce winds piled up snowdrifts 10 to 20 feet deep. On one side of a street there could be bare ground while on the other there were huge drifts of snow. The east river froze over completely.Travel was impossible.

In New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts in places 40 to 50 inches of snow fell. Drifts reached 40 to 50 feet. and railroads were shut down. Winds of 40 mph and more were common. The storm was known as the white hurricane.

Storm lull lowers accumulations

We could have had much more snow. The snow has begun anew and we should see an additional 1 to 3 inches by the time the storm moves out this afternoon.

A dry slot in the storm circulation, caused a pause in the snow for a number of hours. Areas to the east and northeast got the most snow. The Jersey shore, Long Island and Connecticut will have the greatest snow totals.

Biggest Snow This Season

The storm is on. Here comes 5 to 10 inches.

Beware of some predictions which are too high , as I see it.
