Weather forecast headlines for New Jersey and NYC Metro

Cool Super Bowl, not frigid.

Light snow Monday

Snow, ice, rain Wednesday.  Several inches of snow and ice possible, also rain.

Feb. 8,9. Snow likely.  Possibly heavy but with some mixing.

Thursday, January 30, 2014

Weather Outlook: snow, snow, ice, rain, big snow. Look out New Jersey.

Sunday, cloudy, cool.  Super Bowl 35 to 40 degrees.

Monday, about 1" snow

Wednesday, snow, ice, rain a few inches of snow then ice ending as rain

Weekend outlook: major snow possible. ( about a foot in some areas) Feb. 8,9.

Snow,ice,rain threats next week.

Steve DiMartino at NYNJPAWEATHER.com and Facebook sees a lot of winter weather ahead next week, also.  Still too early to make a call for next Tues through Thursday.

Winter reruns ahead......more snow for New Jersey and New York Metro

There are several snowstorms ahead in February.  Or at least there is more moisture ahead, the question is, will it be frozen or not?

Super Bowl Sunday.  snow or a mix is in the forecast early on Sunday with improving weather, later. Moderately cold.

Monday. Light snow.

Wednesday/ Thursday.  A stronger storm with snow or a mix/ rain.  My guess is 4 to 8 inches.  A rerun.

Later , another snowstorm brews.  It is a winter festival ahead, if you like snow.  But we will get a break from the very frigid weather.  In fact , warmer air may be making a comeback.

EURO SHOWS 12" for all of NORTHERN NEW JERSEY, Feb. 5&6. FWIW.

February 9, could see a snowstorm also. With warm air pressing in and cold air in retreat, rain is definitely possible, as well.

The further out in time we go, the more unsettled it all looks.

Weather geek gossip. New Jersey, New York weather forecast turns snowy next week.

Next week should bring significant snow and ice or rain.  So far it looks mostly frozen.  Get your ice melter now.

Weather underground forecasts about 5 to 10 inches of snow next week.

Monday, January 27, 2014

Wednesday brings in a brief light snow.

Based on NAM 4 simulated radar, 0z, we will have several hours of snow showers/ light snow on the 29th.  This may be correct or it may bust.

IF it happens it would be from about midnight Tuesday and end before daybreak on Wednesday.

Arctic front moves through at lunchtime.

... An Arctic front will impact Bergen... Essex... Passaic and western
Union counties...

At 1118 am EST... National Weather Service Doppler radar was tracking
an Arctic front from upstate New York into Pennsylvania... moving
southeast at 25 mph.

* The front will be near...
West Milford by 1220 PM...
Ringwood by 1230 PM...
Wanaque... Pompton Lakes... Oakland and Bloomingdale by 1240 PM...
Wayne... Upper Saddle River... Ramsey and Franklin Lakes by 1250
PM...

Gusty winds up to 45 mph an be expected with the frontal passage. In
addition... scattered snow showers will be possible behind the front.

My updated Super Bowl weather forecast for Sunday, February 2.

My new forecast is slightly warmer and drier.  But otherwise, the forecast I made on Jan. 16th, is about the same.

Mostly cloudy, winds 5 to 10 mph, temperatures 38F to 28 F.

Note that a winter storm moves in the next day on Monday, Feb. 3.

Wednesday, January 22, 2014

February outlook, stormy, snowy, cold.

From DT at Wxrisk, Steve Di Martino at NyNjPaWeather, to Henry Margusity, To Brett Anderson at Accuweather, there is a common thread which is a stormy , cold, February.   And, probably some snowstorms in there.  This is normal for February, it brings the snow to us.

Latest Super Bowl Weather Forecast from the GFS, the Global Forecast System

Mostly cloudy, cold, snow showers, an inch or 2 accumulation.

High temp. 28 F,  low temp. 12 F.

MY ORIGINAL forecast:

Becoming mostly cloudy, windy, snow showers, temp. 25 to 30 at kickoff.

I made this forecast last week, on Jan. 16 th.,  and I am not changing it , so far.  Please note that my forecast is a guess, with a little science thrown in.

Weather for the week of the Super Bowl. Wintry!

The cold and snowy pattern appears to continue right up to the game.

Jan. 27, 28 a significant snowfall is possible, this has been showing up repeatedly.

Feb.2, Sunday, continued cold but a bit milder, mostly cloudy, snow showers.

Latest Weather Forecast for Sunday Super Bowl

The latest GFS data which is always changing is:

High Temp. 15 F.  Low temp. 1 F. Partly cloudy, snow showers.

My original guess which I have not changed is:

Temps. 25 to 30 at kickoff, mostly cloudy, snow showers.

It is still a long way to Ground Hog Day and the Super Bowl but it sure looks wintry, at this time.

Alberta Clipper launches an attack on New Jersey and New York Metro

While it will not be the biggest storm we ever saw it will bring in plenty of wind swept snow and falling temperatures.  Today it was a mild winter day and that all begins changing overnight. Temperatures near zero are possible by Wednesday night.

The storm developed suddenly and was not expected as short a time ago as last Friday.  We shall see just how it evolves, further surprises are possible.  Watch for thunder snow.

Northeast New Jersey has a winter storm warning

Many areas will see 3 to 6 inch amounts, less north and west.  Toward the shore and New York harbor, 6 to 10".

Long Island could get 6 to 12 inches.

A snow band is expected tomorrow from Philadelphia to Toms River to Queens and that will be the area of heavy snow.  Expect a dry powdery snow with very cold temperatures.

... Winter Storm Warning in effect from noon Tuesday to 6 am EST
Wednesday...

The National Weather Service in New York has issued a Winter
Storm Warning for snow... which is in effect from noon Tuesday to
6 am EST Wednesday. The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in effect.

* Locations... northeast New Jersey... southern Westchester
County... and southern Fairfield County.

* Hazard types... heavy snow.

* Accumulations... snow accumulation of 6 to 10 inches.

* Winds... north 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.

* Wind chills... as low as 10 below zero late Tuesday night.

* Temperatures... 10 to 19.

* Visibilities... one quarter mile or less at times.

* Timing... snowfall will begin late Tuesday morning and will
continue through Tuesday night... tapering off early Wednesday
morning. The heaviest snowfall will occur Tuesday afternoon and
evening.

* Impacts... falling... blowing... and drifting snow will cause
hazardous travel and walking conditions across the
area... possibly impacting the late afternoon and evening
commute. Extreme cold and low wind chills could cause frost
bite. Dress appropriately.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather
conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of snow
are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an
emergency. If you must travel... keep an extra flashlight... food...
and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

Super Bowl Sunday Weather Forecast

The trend is snowy for the super weekend.  Sunday , light snow, snow showers, windy and cold.

Monday looks even worse , so postponement may not be a viable option.  There could be snow/ ice/rain on Monday and more of it than on Sunday.  Still too early to be even close to locking in a weather forecast.

Snow Tuesday afternoon and evening

Estimates on accumulation range from 1 to 3". To as much as 5 to 10".  Stay tuned!

Super Bowl Weather Forecast Update

The GFS is backing off on the mild weather and so I decided to stick with my original forecast.

Becoming cloudy, windy, snow showers, temperatures 25 to 30 at game time.

Keep in mind that we are still 2 weeks away but the Polar Vortex will likely stick around until then.  So long as that is the case, expect wintry conditions.

THE WEATHER FORECAST MODELS FOR THE SUPER BOWL  have been trending to more snow.  Some accumulating snow now looks more likely, on the order of  2 cm to 5 centimeters.

Sunday, January 19, 2014

Snow Tuesday

1 to 3 inches between 10 am and 7 pm.  Followed by very much colder.

Weather underground forecasts the Super Bowl

The night before the big game , 3 to 5 inches of snow is forecast.  Snow and rain showers the day of the game.  Temperatures mostly in the 30 's up to near 40 in the afternoon.

Super Bowl Sunday Weather Forecast

Becoming  cloudy, cold, chance of light snow or snow showers, at night, temperatures 22 to 35.F.

The good news is that there is a milding trend right around Super Bowl Sunday, the bad news is that it may bring snow/rain with it.  Too far in the future to make a good guess.

My original Super Bowl Weather Forecast is still not that bad:

Partly cloudy, windy, snow  showers, temperatures 25 to 30 at kickoff. Windy weather conditions are the rule in the meadowlands stadium area.

Some snow may occur on or about Jan. 27, 28.

Snow/rain may occur on the Monday after the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl Sunday Weather Forecast

POLAR VORTEX WINS THE SUPER BOWL !

Snow / rain.  Temps. 25 to 44 F.  ( 7am data, EST ). The stadium located in the meadowlands, is subject to windy conditions, so anyone going to the game needs to be prepared for dealing with rather harsh wintry weather.

In the days before the Super Bowl the weather looks very cold, with snow possible.

This forecast is from the GFS data and will be updated as the data changes.

Harsh winter conditions return next week to New York and New Jersey, weather forecast for Super Bowl

Next week will see a return of cold weather and maybe some snow as well.  Temps will be below freezing all day by the middle of the week.

Super Bowl Forecast
Partly cloudy, windy, snow  showers, temperatures 25 to 30 at kickoff.

The days leading up to the Super Bowl will be cold and probably snowy as well.  Expect snow on the ground and frigid temperatures that week.

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS MY OWN BEST GUESS AND NOT ANY OFFICIAL WEATHER FORECAST.  WE ARE definitely heading into a cold regime with multiple light to moderate snow threats.

Area flood watch, no it is not another Gov. Christie political retribution. Or is it?

We have a lot of see saw weather ahead. Tomorrow is a flood watch for heavy rain combined with snow melt.  Even some river ice jams possible.  You might think that someone is up to no good with an anti global warming weather machine.  Make it look like a natural event but it really is somebody looking to cause a flood for retribution?  Only time will tell.

Jan. 17, 18 the deep freeze appears.  Watch for frozen pipe floods.  Check your heat and hot water systems.  Check with the Governor, just in case. Those Republicans get nasty when you do not do things their way.  If the GWB gets washed away along with your bathroom ceiling, well do not say you we're not warned.

What a vivid imagination.  I must see Walter Mitty.  Tap omertà, to pockets!, topoketa, that is.

Sometimes I hate spell check.  I would rather cast my own spell.

No, I won't shut up, or buy another Frankenphone.  So there!

Super Bowl Weather Prediction

I do not know what it will be weather wise .  But I predict it will be the first and last Super Bowl for New Jersey.

Our infrastructure will struggle to handle the crowds and traffic.  The roads were being updated but they are not yet complete.  Traffic and mass transit headaches will make for a dubious Super Bowl debut for New Jersey.  Austerity and super are two incompatible concepts, yes?

Latest weather geek gossip. Mild, windy rainy Saturday and lookout for MLK weekend!

Saturday will bring very mild weather with a period of heavy rain and wind gusts up to 45 to 50 mph.

MLK weekend will bring a return of winter snows, cold and one guy even used the word blizzard!

We shall see.  But do not believe that winter is now over because of some mild weather in the coming days.  A January thaw?

Enjoy the thaw for the next week.  It may not last.

Strong winds with temperatures near zero.

... Wind Advisory remains in effect from 9 PM this evening to 6 PM
EST Tuesday...

* locations... New York City... Long Island... northeast New Jersey and
portions of the lower Hudson Valley.

* Hazards... strong winds.

* Winds... west 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.

* Timing... strong winds will develop late this evening and
continue into Tuesday afternoon. The highest winds are expected
between midnight and 8 am.

* Impacts... difficult driving conditions in strong winds.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Wind Advisory is issued when sustained winds of 31 to 39 mph...
or gusts of 46 to 57 mph... are expected or occurring. Winds this
strong can make driving difficult... especially for high profile
vehicles. Use extra caution.

BLIZZARD WARNING!!! Long Island, Nassau, Suffolk co.

...BLIZZARD WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THURSDAY TO 1 PM EST
FRIDAY...
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN NEW YORK HAS ISSUED A BLIZZARD
WARNING...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THURSDAY TO 1 PM EST
FRIDAY. THE WINTER STORM WATCH IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT.
* LOCATIONS...LONG ISLAND INCLUDING NASSAU AND SUFFOLK COUNTIES.
* HAZARD TYPES...SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW.
* ACCUMULATIONS...UP TO AROUND 1 INCH OF SNOW IS FORECAST
OVERNIGHT THROUGH THE THURSDAY MORNING RUSH HOUR. AN ADDITIONAL
7 TO 9 INCHES OF SNOW IS FORECAST THURSDAY EVENING THROUGH
FRIDAY. TOTAL ACCUMULATIONS OF 8 TO 10 INCHES ARE FORECAST.
* WINDS...NORTH 25 TO 35 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 45 MPH.
* TEMPERATURES...IN THE LOWER 20S.
* VISIBILITIES...ONE QUARTER MILE OR LESS.
* TIMING...THE HEAVIEST SNOW AND THE STRONGEST WINDS WILL OCCUR THURSDAY
NIGHT INTO FRIDAY.
* IMPACTS...BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW WILL PRODUCE DANGEROUS
TRAVEL CONDITIONS. WIND CHILLS FROM 5 DEGREES BELOW ZERO TO 5
DEGREES ABOVE ZERO WILL PRODUCE EXTREME COLD IMPACTS.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A BLIZZARD WARNING MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE
EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. FALLING AND BLOWING SNOW WITH STRONG WINDS
AND POOR VISIBILITIES ARE LIKELY. THIS WILL LEAD TO WHITEOUT
CONDITIONS...MAKING TRAVEL EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. DO NOT TRAVEL. IF
YOU MUST TRAVEL...HAVE A WINTER SURVIVAL KIT WITH YOU. IF YOU GET
STRANDED...STAY WITH YOUR VEHICLE.

HOLD ALL YOUR BETS, because there has been a major shift in the models.

Check the late afternoon forecasts because a much nastier snowstorm may hit, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania!  The weather may be about to surprise all of us!

For the last 2 days this storm has been gaining all the earmarks of a MAJOR  winter storm.  Yet, the models have been mostly downplaying it here at the surface w here we live.  Now there appears to be a major shift to a more intense storm.

AO has gone negative.
NAO Is also more favorable.
The trough over the eastern US is now going to tilt negative.
A 50/50 low near Newfoundland will help direct the storm our way.
The storm will move closer, move slower and give more snow.
Record or near record cold temps are very near to us.
The Western ridge has a more favorable position.
The trough and the arctic low are digging further south.

But since the models have been all over the place it is hard to judge what may happen.  If the latest trend continues prepare for over a foot of snow in many areas, high winds and bitter cold.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
