As of today the weather models show a snowstorm next week but it misses New Jersey and New York.
After this storm pulls out some mild weather will take over and that should be the end of winter. Still watching the March 6, 7 potential snow, south of us.
Wednesday, February 27, 2013
Attack of the March Blizzard is still on the Euro for New York City and points south. But, will it happen? Who knows?
The winter assault will include Virginia, Delaware, Southeast Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Southern New York, Long Island then out to sea via Martha's Vineyard.
Weather for New York City, on March 6, 7, 2013, is more likely, cloudy with snow showers, but the Euro is not backing down, so far. This, almost certainly, would be our last chance for a significant snow this season.Latest Euro shows a monster 2 foot blizzard next week, but probably, it is wrong. Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey would all be affected if, it were to occur. Coastal flooding would be a concern.

THIS WEEK IN WEATHER 24 FEB 2013
A weather geek show about the end of winter snow chances. Best bet: March 6-7 , maybe. From meteorologist DT, at Wxrisk.
Although the upper air set up is pretty good, it looks like the next 2 storms will miss us because one will be too warm and the next goes out to sea.

Looking for snow?
More rain / snow next Tuesday in a storm similar to this weekend. It will be a bit colder and we could expect more snow especially far Northwest.
A big storm may, may be brewing for Friday, March 1st. This would be the end of winter storm, if it happens. Both the Euro and the GFS are picking it up, so , maybe?

Where is spring?
According to Steve DiMartino, NY NJ PA Weather.com, we have about 2 or maybe 3 weeks of winter left to go. After that a markedly warmer pattern begins.
This weekend, New Jersey will see mostly rain, not snow.
The main center of the weekend storm will be over the Great Lakes and will pull in warm air over NJ.

Snow?
About 1 to 3" in most areas tonight. Heavier in the Philadelphia area. The weekend threat has backed off to only some snow showers.

Light snow Wednesday and Thursday and we try to hit the trifecta on the weekend.
The on again off again storm for Valentine's Day appears to be on with mostly 1 to 3 inch totals. South could see a bit more.
The weekend could be interesting or not. The threat of a major winter storm is there. A polar disturbance, and the southern branch of the jet stream will be interacting in some way, but that may occur inland, on the coast or, out over the open ocean. The large scale pattern is favorable, which is why there is so much attention being given to it.
Will it be a hit or a miss? We should know more after the first storm goes past us Thursday.

Ice, freezing rain and sleet Monday morning, early!
The Valentine snow is not very likely and if it occurs it would be over the southern areas of New Jersey. But the GFS says snow Thursday 6" +. ????
The threat of a potential snow for this weekend is still present. I notice 3 of the main models have the storm this weekend. Something to watch for sure.

Now that we have had some practice, are we ready to shovel more snow?
South Jersey will get some more shoveling in, about Valentines" Day.
The region in general, has a potential storm around President's Day weekend.

What is on the menu? Valentine's Day a storm slides south of us giving only south Jersey snow. Around Presidents Day a major coastal storm is coming into view as a big wrap up to a snowy February.
There will be an almost perfect synoptic set up for an East Coast storm around the PD Weekend. That is, the large scale pattern, will be right for a storm. Exactly how it may play out, as far as rain or snow, is not known at this early juncture.
Do not expect a storm such as we just saw, because those historic storms, are years apart.
Usually. Let us hope so.

Hold the phone! Interesting developments.
The upper level low has developed over NY state and may, in fact, stall the storm now deepening over the Atlantic, east of NJ. According to Steve DiMartino at NYNJPA Weather, this may hold back the storm, acting like an anchor.

Blizzards and pancakes, perfect together!
Watching Nemo.
The 3 foot storm totals put out by the NAM last night , have proven to be unfounded. The highest amounts are in the 6 to 8 inch range. The storm is expected to continue until it winds down near dawn tomorrow. You can only watch the radar images or look out your window from now on to tell how it will go. Forecasters have backed off a bit on the accumulations.
There are at least 2 more chances for more snow over the next 10 days.

Great view of why the snow is not ending yet.
Storm arrives, some areas have all snow , others rain and sleet. The storm has begun to phase, intensify and get colder.
If you have seen only rain/ sleet, so far, the snow is on the way right now. In Wayne, 2" on the ground. NYC now sleet and accumulating. It has barely begun, it is not going out to sea. Conditions will worsen all afternoon and then the real snow hits around nightfall. Be cautious.

" Mother of God."
Nemo, the name given to this impending storm by the Weather Channel, is ready to strike. Comments from the weather geeks on the weather gossip sites and pages include the headline above and " I can't believe this", " This is the most awesome run I have seen ever ". But, there is always doubt. The 6 to 12" figure is easily reached tomorrow almost everywhere.
It will most likely be snowing when you wake up Friday morning. The precip is already above Virginia Beach. There may be sleet and rain mixed in.
New York City will be blasted by snow rates of 3 to 4 " per HOUR. The heavy snow moves in just before nightfall and the Friday rush hour, if there is a rush hour. Many businesses and offices plan to close early.
Totals? 1 or 2 or even 3 feet of snow are possible in some areas.

Latest data says, we get all snow and lots of it.
Best guess is 15 to 20". But it is still not a done deal, so stay tuned. A historic blizzard , may be in the making.
6 to 12" is not a bad forecast and, if it goes to 20", who will notice? Bloomberg this morning said 4 to 6". Wrong again. Ranks with the Lindsay storm and the Blizz of '78.
Blizzard of '13 coming up? Looks like it.

Although New Jersey / New York Metro will miss the brunt of the storm, many areas will see 6 to 10" of snow, maybe more.
Mixing in sleet, rain and freezing rain may happen also. Worst conditions are expected late Friday.
Near Blizzard conditions may occur, especially north and east sections.

Mid-day model runs support trend to a snowy Friday for many areas.
The Euro may be correct, let us see what happens when the new Euro run comes in by mid-afternoon.
So far, there is no reason to doubt a major snowfall, especially for areas north and east of New York City. New York Metro itself has still some room for doubt, but it is getting narrowed down with each passing hour.

Euro predicts 12 to 18 inches of snow across portions of New York Metro, but can it be believed?
No official word yet, but a reasonable guess would be 6"+, with a potential for a foot or more. The phasing of the southern disturbance and the northern one is crucial. The Euro is right only if the 2 storms phase perfectly. Possible yes , but not a done deal. We may know for sure by tonight or tomorrow.
This phasing can go right or wrong by as little as a 6 hour difference, maybe less. This is where the uncertainty comes in.
Southern NJ will see more rain than snow.

Word from the early bird, is that New England gets a classic Nor'Easter, with 1 to 2 feet of snow, on the east portions. Weather Friday for New York Metro is uncertain, snow is possible.
When things change , they change in a hurry!
The storm approaches Cape Hatteras Thursday and moves to New England on Friday. Much of New Jersey will see mostly rain, except areas north and west, which will get a snowy mix. A very close call.
This is still very tentative, given such a slim margin between rain and snow.
From NWS, Mass. office:
" potential for a foot or more of snow..."
Epic blizzard just misses New Jersey / New York Metro? We shall see.
***DT at Wxrisk thinks the New York Metro area could be looking at 4 to 8" snow Friday. Possible? Yes. Rain is a big feature , for NJ, along with coastal flooding, again.
Big rain, early next week for New Jersey is pretty certain.
****A major snow is possible around Valentine's Day! **** Thanks to NYNJPA WEATHER. And, DT @ Wxrisk.com.

Another light snow after this one. Friday will be a close call, looks like rain/snow mix but Boston, for example, could get well over a foot of snow.
The Thursday night, Friday storm will bear watching , especially in places like West Milford. The EURO may be correct in forecasting a major storm for Friday in New Jersey/ New York metro and especially Eastern New England.

The experts are divided on what to expect the next 6 weeks, mostly because the computer models have some sort of stomach virus and can't agree or be consistent on anything. But it looks like the core of the cold air is headed away from North America, and if that trend holds it should turn mild again soon.
I think that Punxsutawney Phil is on the right track. Spring is near.

Diamond dust falling over North Jersey.
A thin coating so far of a steady very light and sparkling snow. The dearth of snow this season makes it all the more appealing. Maybe about 1 inch expected, more near shore areas.
The EURO, which has lost it's marbles this winter, is calling for several feet of snow in New England next weekend. Meanwhile the GFS has a killer blizzard for February 15th. Dreams are made of this.
Phil says winter is all but over and he may be correct. Here he is again.

Headline: Winter will wind down in about 7 to 10 days.
Unless a negative NAO develops, or in other words, a Greenland blocking high pressure area, there is little chance of any big snow in the next 2 weeks. Steve D. at NYNJPA weather expects a very mild March.
