SEVEN DAY FORECAST
SEVEN DAY FORECAST
Sat. Feb. 26 to March 5 ( from NY NJ PA Weather .com ) A rainy Monday on tap, with winds again.
Significant storm possible again in the March 5-10 time frame. It could be snow, but more likely rain. Not that we need it, unless you want to break the seasonal snow records for our area.
Thursday, February 24, 2011
Strong tropical storm force winds possible, along with heavy rains on Friday!
1" to 2" of rain is likely with wind gusts near 60 mph Friday. Flooding possible from the rain and snow melting combination.
Wednesday, February 23, 2011
Rain on the way this time. Maybe heavy Thursday late into Friday.
I have to cave in and I have to say that it will be almost all rain for us and heavy rain at that. Flooding Friday is certainly possible. With 6" plus of snow cover melting under heavy rain, the streams and rivers could easily flood. Keep tuned to warnings which may be posted tomorrow.
Meanwhile in Upstate NY, there is a 6" + snowfall on the way.

IMO it looks like snow late Friday into Saturday
The GFS shows snow and I tend to believe it, for late Friday into Saturday morning with light to moderate amounts.

Snow begins late Sunday into Monday, light to moderate accumulations.
2 to 4" of snow is expected by NY NJ PA Weather.com across much of Northern NJ.
Don't threaten me!
Old man winter makes a return if only briefly, Sunday into Monday. Bloody, but unbowed, winter will make a try at closing in again. But winter has had its back broken and the smell of the earth has replaced the cool aromas of ice and snow. The hawk is soaring today, as residents of Chicago might say.
We know that winter will return when the season is right and that is as it should be.

Budget cuts will cripple weather forecasting. Upper air data to be collected once every 48 hours, instead of once every 12 hours.
A proposal to save money on weather forecasting, is to reduce the upper air observations to once every 48 hours. This would render the NWS and all private forecasting services, to Stone Age technology.
They cannot be serious. Accurate weather forecasts save lives, each year. It is a vital part of national security.
I may have a better idea. Instead of 11 nuclear powered super aircraft carriers, why can't we scrape by with 8? NYC wants to cut the Fire Dept., Washington wants to cut childhood services. Is something going wrong here?
Do I sound p***ed Off? You bet !!!

February turns mild but then it might go back to wild.
Some meteorologists are saying that our mild weather will move in around Valentines Day but, only last a week or two. March could be stormy and chilly with snow possible. Sounds reasonable.
Forecaster Steven D. thinks a storm is possible between Feb. 26th to March 10th, as a last gasp of winter. See NY NJ PA Weather .com

Storms for this week are fading, a switch to a more moderate pattern is building now.
The Thursday snowstorm now looks like a no storm. We won't be sure until Tuesday morning though.
The ridge over the west coast is breaking down and this will give us at least a respite, from the constant arctic air and snows. Although it may still snow, it would be more on the order of a 6" snow, followed a couple of days later, by 50 degrees +. Pacific air masses will be the main feature, for at least the next couple of weeks.

A little more white stuff on Saturday, and maybe some more next Thursday.
NW NJ and West Milford, may see 3" to 6" of snow on Saturday, below Rte. 287, probably 1 to 3" of snow , sleet and some rain, changing back to snow, Saturday night. Coastal areas may get a soaking rain. NY NJ PA Weather.com expects minor flooding problems Saturday.
We may get a quick 1 or 2 inches of snow Monday or Tuesday ahead of colder air.
Far ahead, the models are sending a low pressure system up the east coast next Thursday. A very interesting week to watch, because someone will get a big storm. The NAO, is going to take a nosedive and this is a sign of a major storm.
Both the mets. and weather weenies are really buzzing about this one. Watch out. AccuWeather.com's Henry Margusity, has been holding on to the idea of a big storm around the 10th. He may need his Big Daddy hat next week. But even Henry admits that the Northeast does not really need more snow.

All of the forecasts for this event are fragile. The weather tonight and tomorrow could be much different from what you read in the forecast.
Sorry, but that is the way it is.

ICE STORM WARNING IN EFFECT!
3:00 PM : Temps are falling, so ice later tonight is becoming more likely. For a number of hours, there is a break now, in the precipitation, the ice begins again later, after dark. The precipitation over the area around Kentucky is heavy and this could cause us serious icing problems.
From RTE.287 on north and west snow and ice are still on the way.
A serious ice storm is still in the forecast tonight and tomorrow, for all of North Jersey. About midnight is the likely time for ice/sleet to begin again.

Forecasts for snow goes bust in many areas. Ice problems still expected. Rain Wed. afternoon? Maybe.
NWS: ICE STORM WARNING! Later today and tomorrow.
Snow and sleet is less than expected in North Jersey this morning, part 2 of the storm comes in tomorrow, icing then plain rain, now seem possible, tomorrow. In general the storm is so far, underperforming, due to a upper level low, that unexpectedly formed over VA. This low had the effect of shutting off the precipitation in many areas.
Warmer air in South Jersey may move north. Only NW, NJ will get the snow and ice problems, the rest of NJ seems to be getting some ice then plain rain by tomorrow afternoon.
I am waiting for word from the forecasters as the new data comes in early this afternoon. So we have way less snow but still sleet and freezing rain tonight and early tomorrow. There could be a lot of rain later in the day, tomorrow. All of the forecasts are fragile and subject to change. Nowcasting is the way to go. See NY NJ PA Weather.com.
The freezing line will hover so close to Northern NJ that the ice or rain could fluctuate unexpectedly. Colder seems to be the trend.
Meanwhile a blizzard will rage in the plains states then on to Chicago, Detroit, Buffalo, Syracuse, Albany etc.
Snow possible for our area, this weekend, if it stays cold enough. The pattern has changed to a milder scenario, after we get rid of the cold air still here, the next couple of days. But, don't expect Spring , just yet. We may shift back to cold, later in February.
New York City is an unlikely place for an ice storm because of the geographical location, and the urban heat island effect, but it is not impossible.
The January 26th thaw I was looking for is here now, such as it is.
This all changed over the span of a few hours this morning. We were always just on the border of the freezing precip. and snow.
It is probably better to forecast snow and ice, and then, if it warms, we are off the hook.
